what is pilates?

The Pilates method was developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920's. It is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body while also enhancing posture, balance and coordination. It is particularly effective in developing core strength. Pilates is process oriented and concerns itself with the quality of movement and fewer repetitions. The movement is very focused, keeping the mind connected to the body.

“It is the mind itself which builds the body.”
- Joseph Pilates

The dynamic which sets Pilates apart from other forms of body conditioning is the breathing and how it incorporates the postural muscles of the torso. By strengthening core muscles, you are able to move with more balance and ease. Greater stability is achieved and movement becomes more powerful. Instead of building bulk, Pilates gives you a longer, leaner look.

The Pilates workout optimizes efficiency in movement. It is therefore the perfect compliment to any sports training or performance. It builds muscle endurance, improves coordination and conditions the body using a wide range of movement. Beginner level exercises are primarily mat based. Specialized Pilates equipment is later incorporated, challenging core stability. Equipment with weighted springs creates resistance, helping to increase bone density. Pilates is beneficial for any age, gender or fitness level.
